Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS)

Bruges , Belgium

  • The UNU Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS) focuses on the study of processes of regional integration and cooperation, and their implications. UNU-CRIS acts as a resource for the UN system, with particular links to the UN bodies dealing with regional integration, and works in partnership with institutes and initiatives throughout the world that are concerned with issues of integration, governance and cooperation.

The mission of UNU-CRIS is to contribute towards achieving the universal goals of the UN and UNU through comparative and interdisciplinary research and capacity-building for a better understanding of the processes and consequences of intra- and inter-regional integration. The research activities of the Institute are organized in four research programmes — focusing on (1) studying regions and regional integration from a comparative and multi-level governance perspective, (2) monitoring and assessing regional integration worldwide, (3) studying the global-regional peace and security complex, and (4) assessing the socio-economic dimensions of regional integration — and a capacity-building and development programme.
