Overview
Location
  • The United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM) focuses on the interrelated research areas of globalization, culture and mobility. It has been established on the premise that in an increasingly globalized world, mobility and cultural contacts are both commonplace and complicating factors with regard to national, regional and communal identities. At the same time, such mobility is also the means through which globalization propels itself.

Within this context, two phenomena come to the fore as key social processes: those of migration, understood as the movement of peoples and cultures; and media, understood as increased and diverse modes of communication across space via technological and other means.

UNU-GCM aims to contribute towards an improved understanding of migration and media as key aspects of cultures in the context of globalization that are vital for the promotion of good governance, cultural diversity, democracy and human rights. They are equally as important to developing and transitional countries as to more developed countries and especially so in contact zones, networks, borders and routes where cultural and economic differences are prominent.
