The UNU Migration Network is a member of the Global Migration Group (GMG) and contributes to the activities of the different Working Groups and Task Forces of this interagency group of the United Nations that promotes the wider application of all relevant international and regional instruments and norms relating to migration. The GMG is the principal inter-agency coordination mechanism on migration, encompassing 17 entities of the UN system and the International Organization for Migration.

The activities of the GMG have been conducive to the recognition of migrants as a vulnerable category of individuals and people in the formulation of the post-2015 development agenda and the UNU Migration Network has been particularly active in providing insights for this process.
