In a changing world, where developments challenge traditional decision making and (nation) states find it increasingly difficult to govern social and economic processes that are ever more cross boundary in nature, regional governance has become a powerful tool to address such a growing complexity. This policy brief discusses the need to look at regionalism with a critical eye, pointing out the undeniably important achievements, the hidden threats that a certain model of regional integration (for instance, the classical top-down elite-driven process adopted by the EU founding fathers) can pose to the sustainability of regional cohesion and the adaptability of this model to other areas of the world.
