Statelessness and transcontinental migration

This research project focuses on a range of issues related to the wellbeing and recognition of people who traverse continents devoid of citizenship. Issues related to refugees remain crucially unanswered in debates and policies surrounding migration. In the wake of acknowledgement within the academy that it is not always possible to isolate refugees from migrants, this project analyses a range of contexts where dignity and human rights are compromised through the absence of legal and political recognition. By focusing on situations of extreme vulnerability and on lives lived on the borderline, this research project seeks to articulate and address urgent needs with regard to the stateless migrants who have entered Europe.

This research project has among its outputs:
- A series of Policy Reports addressing the question of statelessness
- An open forum entitled “Una tierra de acogida: What is Spain’s role in the development of international good practice?”. This public event was filmed and the video can be downloaded from the UNU-GCM website following this link. Transcriptions and translations (in Spanish and English) of the initial interventions are also available.
- A Conference on “Statelessness and transcontinental migration”, at which a diverse range of scholars present and debate their ongoing work in the area. The conference programme and further details are available here: http://gcm.unu.edu/index.php/events/conference
- A website which examines statelessness through visual arts. The launch of the statelessness website will happen during the II UNU-GCM Conference “Statelessness and Transcontinental Migration“, on July 24th-25th, 2014.
